Enjoyed your descriptions of the volcanoes in Hawaii. We enjoyed them close up and personal on a couple of occasions - standing only a few feet away from the red hot lava flow of Kilauea. It was an unforgetable experience. See our new book about our experience when our 22 year old son was lost in Hawaii. The book is titled Where There is Hope.
It's a great experience. I really like this place. It shows that creation and destruction appear sometimes very close together. Of course I don't like the smog (vog) that it sometimes creates. It makes it hard to live here.
TIP: The closest and most affordable VR and B&B's in the Volcanic area you will find in Puna - very rural and peaceful area - don't expect no city life.
BTW: Did you see the story about the surfer close to the lava flow. Crazy! See blog entry from July 11
We went to the Big Island of Hawaii on a cruise around the islands on the Pride of Aloha. The ship sailed past the volcano at night and it was an awesome site. We recommend anyone staying on the Big Island to stay in a vacation rental by owner for an affordable vacation in a self catering accommodation.
